    What is the Student Partners Program (SPP) in Canada?

    SPP or students Partners Program is an administrative framework designed by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC)in partnership with the Canadian Immigration Offices in India to streamline the visa process for admission to Canadian colleges. The main objective of this program was to offer maximum support for Indian students aspiring to study and work in Canada.

    SPP was launched in 2009 for Indian students. However, it turned out to be highly successful, and it is now extended to China as well. Currently, the Student partner program is open for Indian and Chinese students.

    What are the Eligibility Criteria to Apply Under SPP?

    Students applying under the Students Partners Program must meet the following eligibility criteria:

    • Overall, 6.0 band in IELTS with no less than 5.5 in each module, valid for 2 years
    • Students with rejection in previous Canada Student Visas should not reapply under SPP.
    • Must provide proof of payment of tuition fees for one year or one semester.
    • Students must not have more than eight backlogs in recent studies.
    • Must have a minimum of 50% in their recently completed education as per the SPP institution-specific requirement.
    • Courses applied must be relevant to the student’s previous educational background.
    • A study gap of more than five years is not accepted. However, some exceptions exist for students with a 3-year gap having excellent grades and relevant work experience.

    Document Checklist for SPP

    • Valid Passport and Photographs
    • IELTS Scorecard
    • Offer letter from SPP authorised college
    • Proof of funds
    • Marksheets, degree certificate, and transcripts
    • Medical Examination report
    • Family Information Declaration
    • Purchase a specific Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from Scotia Bank, SBI, or ICICI Bank to cover living expenses for the first year of stay in Canada.

    How to Apply?

    Nearly 40 or more Canadian colleges accept applications under SPP. You need to apply for a relevant course in any SPP-listed college. Application for admission to SPP colleges must be submitted at least four weeks before the start date. You need to meet the eligibility criteria and provide the required documents and the application form to apply to SPP college. The average processing time for an SPP student visa application is 5 to 10 days.

    Work in Canada Under SPP

    All the students who have graduated with a recognized qualification from any accredited institutions in Canada can apply for a work permit in Canada.

    The current work permit rules allow international students to apply for a 3year post-study work visa if the course duration is two years or higher. However, students who have a course duration of one year or less will get a work permit equal to their study period.

    Note that all the students who have completed their graduation can apply for Canadian work permits regardless of whether the college is SPP or Non-SPP.
