Are you Struggling with IELTS Listening?

IELTS Listening Format:

The IELTS Listening test is the same for Academic and General Training students.

1. The overall Listening test consists of 40 minutes. The recording will be 30 minutes long.

2. Paper-based tests and computer-based tests are different for transferring answers.

  • In a Paper-based exam, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. (after 10 minutes you cannot write anything on the sheet)
  • In the computer-based exam, you will be given 2 minutes to check your answers. Here, the time is less than a paper-based exam because you will not be given any answer sheet and have to type the answers directly into the given space while you listen to the recording. (after 2 minutes your computer screen will be locked)

3. In your IELTS Listening test 40 questions will be asked. So, each question carries one mark and you have to score out of 40. There is either 1 mark for the right answer or 0 for the wrong answer and no negative marking. Hence, attempt all the questions and do not leave them blank.

Top 8 Mistakes to Avoid in IELTS Listening

1. Mindless Reading: The Most Common Mistake in IELTS Listening

Sometimes it becomes an activity where your ears catch the words, but your brain fails to comprehend them. You will be given time to read the questions, so make sure to understand them. The questions and answers will not be spoken exactly as they appear in your booklet; they will be paraphrased. Here, you should also know a variety of synonyms for common vocabulary.

2. Skipping Instructions: A Major Mistake in IELTS Listening

Missing a simple detail like word limits or answer formats—can cost you valuable points, even if you know the right answer. For example, write your answers from A-I given in the box while you wrote the answer in words, this will be marked wrong. Moreover, word limit is also a speed breaker, if you exceed this limit, your answer will be marked incorrect.

3. The Myth of Passive Learning in IELTS Listening

You may have heard that listening to podcasts or watching movies featuring native English speakers won’t help improve your understanding. However, this is a myth! Exposure to different accents and pronunciations—many of which you may not be familiar with—can significantly enhance your listening skills. By regularly engaging with native content, you train your ears to recognize commonly used words and phrases more easily. Plus, you can replay and review the audio multiple times (something you can’t do in the exam). So, if you’re enjoying entertainment while learning, you’re definitely on the right path!

4. Stop your Mind Wander: Avoid This IELTS Listening Mistake

There is some extra information you listen in between which is relevant but not needed. This may distract your mind and may panic that your next answers are left by you. Thus, concentrate on what is being said and understand instead of just focusing on the keywords.

5. Elimination Method

Using elimination methods in question types like M.C.Q. or matching is totally worth it. Here, you need to listen to the options carefully to eliminate the wrong one for M.C.Q. Additionally, you can write the points of information you listen to on your question booklet to compare and decide your answer at last (only for matching the relevant information from the box).

6. Mastering Map Questions: Don’t get lost

Imagine you’ve just arrived in a new city, and your phone’s GPS has stopped working. A friendly local starts giving you directions: “Walk past the café, turn left at the bookshop, and you’ll find the museum right opposite the bakery.” Sounds simple, right? But if you weren’t paying close attention, you might end up wandering in circles!

Therefore, to solve the map you need to imagine yourself in the given map and drag your pen wherever the speaker says. Also, the entrance or the point which speaker describes as the starting point should be your eye focus.

7. Don’t Rely on General Knowledge in IELTS Listening

Of course, you are very smart but this is not the exam of general knowledge. Here, you need to listen to the recording and then decide what your answer is/ what you have heard. Wake up!  predicting the answer by the given information is good but do not rely on it just focus on what you listen to and understand.

Yes, you can predict the answer using grammar. For example, they can make inland cities more ______. (Here more is given in front of blank and after reading the sentence, the answer can be an adjective because more is used in comparative adjectives)

8. Common Spelling Mistakes in IELTS Listening

One of the most common mistakes in IELTS Listening is spelling errors. If your spelling is incorrect, your answer will be marked wrong. Therefore, it’s essential to pay attention to spelling from the very beginning of your listening practice. Here, you can start spelling practice from the beginning of your IELTS practice, thus you will learn both spelling and vocabulary.
