What is the MATES Scheme?

The Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals (MATES) is a new initiative by the Australian government that allows skilled workers from select countries to temporarily work in Australia. There are two stages to be a part of this visa scheme-

1. MATES pre-application ballot

2. MATES- visa application

1. MATES- pre-application ballot

Firstly, you have to register for the MATES ballot and if you are randomly selected for the ballot, you can apply for the visa.

Eligibility for registering in MATES- pre-application Ballot:

• Hold a valid Indian passport
• Hold a valid PAN number issued by Indian Government
• Be aged between 18-30 years
• Not already be registered in the MATES ballot
• Have a valid email address
• Agree to registration form declaration
• Pay the registration fee (AUD 25)

Family Inclusion:

• Eligible family members (e.g., spouse or partner) can register separately in the ballot.
• Family member details are not required during your ballot registration.
• If selected in the ballot for the Subclass 403 MATES stream visa, you will be the main applicant.
• As the main applicant, you can include eligible family members in your visa application.
  

2. MATES- visa application

For this process, you need to apply online on or before the specified date mentioned in your “notification of selection” letter. Your graduation should be from an eligible Australian university or institute with an eligible qualification.

Eligibility criteria to apply for MATES visa

• Be selected for the MATES ballot
• Hold a valid passport
• Should be in the specified age (18-30 years)
• Be outside of Australia
• Have not previously applied for MATES visa
• Have recently graduated from an eligible institute within two years of the beginning of the ballot registration open period. Kindly check the link to see your eligible institute- Eligible Institute
• Qualification must be equivalent to Bachelor’s degree, Bachelor degree (honours/research), Postgraduate diploma, Master’s degree, Doctoral degree.
• Your qualification must also relate to one of these industries:
  • renewable energy
  • mining
  • engineering
  • information communications technology
  • artificial intelligence
  • financial technology
  • Agricultural technology
• Meet English language requirement
• Meet the health requirement
• Meet the character requirement
• Adequate health insurance
• Genuine temporary stay requirement
• Have paid back your debt to Australian Government
• Not had a visa canceled or visa refusal
