About Citizenship

Citizenship is not a visa, it will give you a status of Australian national and you will get a Australian Passport, once you will grant your citizenship status. Australia supports Dual-Citizenship, if your own country supports it in vice-versa.

To get citizenship by conferral, which is most common way to get a citizenship for people migrate in Australia and subsequently became Australian Permanent resident need to satisfy a requirement of residency and general ability requirement. The rules to grant a citizenship has been changed on 1 July 2007 and now there are two group of people, who are eligible to get Citizenship by conferral.
  1. People who became permanent residents on or after 1 July 2007
  2. People who became permanent residents before 1 July 2007

There are all general eligibilities are same for all people, who wish to get citizenship by conferral except residence requirement.

Residence Requirements

  • People who became permanent residents on or after 1 July 2007
    Must have been lawfully resident in Australia for four years immediately before applying including
    1. 12 months as a permanent resident
    2. Absences from Australia of no more than 12 months, including no more than three months in the 12 months before applying.
  • If people became permanent residents before 1 July 2007 and apply before 30 June 2010
    They must have been physically present in Australia as a permanent resident for a total of two years in the five years before applying, including one year in the two years before applying.

Minimum eligibility to apply Citizenship by conferral

  • Must have passed a Citizenship test
  • be aged 18 years or over at the time the application is made
  • be a permanent resident at the time of application, and also, at time of decision
  • must satisfy the residence requirement
  • be likely to reside, or to continue to reside, in Australia or to maintain a close and continuing association with Australia
  • Must be of good character.

What does an Australian citizenship allows you to do?

Australian citizenship formalises your membership of the Australian community. It entitles you to the privileges of Australian citizenship and also brings with it responsibilities.

Privileges of Australian citizens

Once you became an Australian citizen, you are entitled to get benefit of following:

  • You can live in Australia for life time if you wish.
  • You can apply for an Australian passport and to leave and re-enter Australia without applying for a resident return visa or any other visa.
  • You will get assistance from Australian diplomatic representatives while overseas.
  • You can work in the public service sector.
  • You can serve in the armed forces of Australia.
  • You can register as Australian citizens by descent any of your children born overseas after you become an Australian citizen
  • You can stand for Parliament
  • You can vote to elect members of Parliament.

Responsibilities of Australian citizens

Citizenship also brings with it responsibilities. For example, citizens are required you to:

  • obey Australian laws
  • defend Australia should the need arise
  • serve on a jury if called to do so
  • enroll on Federal and state/territory electoral registers
  • Vote in elections.
